There are several reasons why it is a good idea to use dog outfits on your dog. Seven reasons come to mind.
Reason Number 1: Warmth
If you are cold in your house, your dog is cold, too. Of course, if the dog is incredibly shaggy and covered with a heavy coat, his dog collar may be all the clothes he needs. The quickest way to tell if your dog is cold is to feel her ears. If her ears are cold, she may well be cold. Think of a dog shirt, hoodie or long johns (yes, they make them for dogs!) as adding a layer. If you have on a long-sleeved shirt and add a jacket to wear around the house, your pet may well need another layer, too.
Reason Number 2: Warmth x 10
Now that your dog has an extra layer in the house, what about trips outside? Dogs are warm-blooded and they can get very cold outside very quickly. If you as the Pet Parent put on extra layers of jackets or coats to go outside, do the same for your pet. Think of a child playing in the snow. The child has extra layers to keep warm. When he goes inside, as the snow melts, he gets wet, you dry him off and change his clothes into nice dry ones. Your pet comes in from the snow or rain, think about a nice drying with a towel and a change to dry clothes.
Reason Number 3: Protect Those Paws
Paws are generally tough, but because they might be hairy and have so many folds and crevices, walking a dog in some areas may be very hazardous to the health of their paws. This time of year, in many colder climates, salt, brine and cinders are used to put cover the streets and sidewalks to allow traffic to flow, but salt and brine can dry out paws, and cinders, by nature, are gritty and sharp. Walking on ice by itself may lead to cuts. Manufacturers are producing better quality dog boots that have better material and fit better. Again, if the pet owner wears boots to keep warm while walking the dog, why not have the dog wear boots as well?
Reason Number 4: Meeting People
Dogs attract attention; dogs in outfits attract more attention. Remember the advertisement where the men were renting dogs to attract ladies? I don't agree with the concept, but when meeting other people, dogs can often break the ice, and dogs in clothes can help continue the conversation. As in any situation where you want to meet people, choosing your own clothes is important. Choosing the right dog outfit is crucial. Do you want to seem practical? A warm sweater on a cold day is a safe bet. Do you want to seem fun loving, pick a whimsical outfit. Since some vets are prescribing sunglasses for dogs, and since as a responsible pet owner you choose glasses that fit properly, sunglasses may tell the world that you are a caring owner. At least it will start a conversation.
Reason Number 5: Make a Funny Statement
Most people love irony. It makes us smile, it brings out our whimsical side and it adds to the fun of owning a pet. "Daddy's Princess" in white letters on a pink shirt on a bulldog is irony. A black shirt with the words "Security" in white letters on a Maltese is irony. Irony is funny, starts conversations and helps the Pet Parent/Pet bond and makes others smile.
Reason Number 6: Make a Serious Statement
Therapy and Service Dogs wear certain outfits which designate them to the public as working dogs. In a sense, they define the dog and the owner. Outfits define the owner, and whether it is a political statement, an identification of a dog as a beloved pet, or letting the world know that the owner has invested money in the dog, dog outfits make a statement.
Reason Number 7: Interaction
Dogs love attention from their Pet Parents. If a dog can learn to wear a collar, they can learn to wear a shirt. Putting the outfit on the dog requires one on one attention and care. It is a little, very special moment between Pet Parent and Pet. Picking up the boots and jacket lets the dog know that a walk is about to happen. Putting on long johns lets the owner spend some time one on one with the dog. Taking an outfit off, and giving the pet a mini massage makes for a happy pet.
Dog Clothes may be a good way for owners to interact with the pet and with others. A warm outfit on a cold day, a set of boots on a cinder or salt-laden pavement and a statement on the dog can have benefits. Pet owners who don't have outfits for their dogs should at least weigh the factors and make the decision with the best interests of the pet in mind.
