If we have a look over the history, we have come to know that until 1960s, these were the only iron available. The blade is basically a cleaned line club with a short head, a small sweet spot and a small sole. These blades help to enhance the player's control over his or her hit. Anything that is not struck from the middle of the club face will not get the desired flight. This is for this reason the blades today are so designed and played by only professional golfers.
As these are small in size, yet these have more mass behind the sweet spot. This sweet spot is responsible directing your power and control whenever you strike the ball in the center of club face. Most of the traditional golfers find it very apt to have a blade as it give them better strike.
In order to lower the center of gravity, a large amount of weight is put in the bottom of the clubhead. By doing so, a player can hit a ball higher with a soft landing. However, few club makers are making designs, which have less weight around the sole and are useful for low trajectories shot with a lot of wind blowing.
Classic blades are of course look good and are handy too, but the problem arises when club maker feel the need to distribute the weight evenly with such a small clubhead. However, great work has been done or still new inventions are being made, it is not difficult to say that the days of the blades are already numbered.
Oversize Perimeter-Weighted Irons
Being of classical importance, these clubs range at the opposite side of the spectrum. These are introduced in the market about thirty years ago. The weight was distributed between toe and heel. As the main purpose of designing these clubs was to improve the accuracy and distance of miss hit shots, but yet these clubs have some drawbacks associated with them. As we know that the weight is distributed between heel and toe, it can create problem for players. The weight during a swing may open or close, creating problems and most probably results in uncontrolled strikes.
With the advancement and modifications in the models and designs, the clubhead grow bigger, the weight is evenly distributed around the edges. This increases the hitting area and also expands the sweet spot. Perimeter weighted irons are usually made of stainless steel or other alloys. They have a wide sole along with a cavity at the back. As these are massive in size, so they automatically bring some precision in striking the ball. In this way they raise the confidence level of many players.
The world's best selling club, The Ping Eye-2 is a major example of oversize perimeter weighted irons. Although, players prefer to use the mid-sized irons, some even bigger designs have been introduced by some club makers. These oversize perimeter weighted irons are meant to design for amateur, but there usage is not limited and these irons are used by some of the senior golfers as well.
