Two New Books Fictionalizing Real Heroes
Two new books have hit the literature scene fictionalizing real life people who many regard as American legends, although in vastly different ways. The book Shall Never See So Much by Gerald Gillis fictionalizes Robert Kennedy through the eyes of Kate Flannagan, a fictional character.
In Shall Never See So Much, Kennedy is seen in a positive light through the eyes of the female protagonist who is pitted against her brother who is serving in the Vietnam War. The book weaves fictional and actual events together and asks the question what if Bobby Kennedy had not been killed in 1968. The book is available on Amazon and gives a reader a glimpse of America in 1968.
Contrary to Shall Never See So Much, the book Chasing Eliot Ness by Michelle Regan fictionalizes the legendary Untouchables leader in a less than positive light. Much like the book by Gillis, Regan sees the character through the eyes of the female protagonist, Grace Kinney who is first infatuated with Ness until his true character slowly develops throughout the book, leaving her terrified of him at the end after an affair.
Chasing Eliot Ness is one of several books that have been written fictionalizing Ness, although this is the first that casts him as a romantic anti-hero and looks into more personal aspects of his life. Al Capone, Frank Nitti, Alla Nazimova and F. Scott Fitzgerald are also fictionalized in this book as well. Regan also mixes real life and fictional events and makes use of real and fictional places in Chicago as well, giving the reader a glimpse of what life was like in Chicago during the days of Al Capone, the start of the Great Depression and prohibition.
There are some people who are destined to live on forever and are fictionalized in books. While many writers try to make their fictional characters true to the nature of the real life person, many take creative liberties. Gillis gives the readers a story that asks what if Kennedy lived and makes him a bigger icon. Regan gives readers a story that asks what was Ness doing behind closed doors and turns the prohibition agent into a man so determined to get what he wants out of life, including the arrest of Capone, that he is sexy, but menacing.
We may wonder if this is the start of a trend of more books about legendary people, what might have been and a glimpse into their sex lives.
