How Would You Have Handled This - Screaming Child Ruined 50 Min Tour?
I took a tour that was limited to 8 people on a golf cart. We were getting a close up view of the animals at the Wild Animal Park and it lasted 50 minutes. What should have been fun was 50 minutes of torture. Why? What looked like a cute angelic 3 yr old before the tour became a screaming beast once on the golf cart. For most of the 50 minutes she screamed, screeched, kicked the back of my seat trying to escape her mother's grasp and run around and play. None of us could hear the tour guide. Others were givng her mother looks of death, and finally she slapped the child on the leg and the nonsense stopped. I'll admit I did offer to drop her and the child into the lion enclosure. Giving looks of death and jokingly making a comment about the lion enclosure weren't effective. The tour guide wasn't about to do anything about it. What course of action would you suggest?
Several years ago, I had this problem in a store; the child was screaming and running around, possibly putting himself in harm's way and certainly bothering the rest of us. The mother was oblivious.
I went to the parents and asked, "Do we have a problem here? Can I do anything to help?"
I have used that technique and have never had to go beyond the second sentence. If the parents do reply, explain that he was disrupting and you wanted to know whether you could do anything to help.
If they say no, come back with "Can you keep him with you quietly please?" Try this next time.
It calls everyone's attention to the problem but in the least threatening way you can. (After all, it is a major problem to all of you.)
Some parents are just not up to training their children. Yesterday, as I was coming home, a 3 yr. old ran out in the street. I had been watching him running around with his mother nearby and not doing anything to stop him. I was going about 15 mph; if I had been going the speed limit, 30 mph, I would have hit him. He ran out between 2 cars into my path. I turned around and told his mother what happened and asked her to keep him out of the street. She asked, clueless, "Why couldn't you see him?" I explained that he was invisible to me when he came out between the 2 cars (angle parking). She said something mild to him. I didn't make any impression on her. It made me feel better because if this happens again (about 1/2 block behind my house), I will have no guilt.
You might try the words I used. It might make an impression and might not. I am sorry your tour was disrupted; yes, you have a right to ask for whatever compensation that would make you happy. It should have been the guide's place to keep peace. Clearly, she was not equipped to do so. Maybe your intercession will give the zoo a procedure so that this will not happen in future tours. Then, you certainly would have done something useful.
This time, if you had said something after 5 minutes of this, you probably would have been given a standing ovation (if you could stand in the golf cart!) Wish I could have had this tour minus the 3 yr. old. You all have a right for quiet, but the child needs discipline also.
Please don't hesitate next time. You would have been the hero-certainly, now you are trying to do something about this in the future.
