An Artist's Story In Creating Pet Portraits
Human portraiture and animal portrait painting are so much alike, except that animals show a particular distaste for keeping still and posing. An artist has to put in a good deal of work just to keep the animal's attention on her. This is the expertise of a female artist who resides in Wilmington. The Delaware family are her relatives. Her grandfather is a painter who created a collection of sea and landscape paintings which became famous. Incidentally, this female artist began to paint at 3 years old. She found herself drawing animals most of the time. Two years after she had her one child show at the local library at the young age of 10, she was already illustrating children's books. Thanks to her famous Philadelphia teachers, she became acquainted with the world of dance. She was an incredible dancer and danced solo performances, including one convincing death scene, for many years.
Of all the animals she has painted portraits of, what interests her the most are canines. The way she starts working on a dog's portrait sparks interest. While the dog's owner is busy keeping the dog still, she is busy making as many sketches as possible.
Her pencil just seems to move like the wind over her sketchpad as she looks for the most characeteristic pose for her model. In the meantime she is constantly talking to the dog, telling him how beautiful he is, what a good dog and so forth. She uses all kinds of props, even tidbits of food to hold the animal's interest. She also requests for the photographs that the owner has and asks permission to make duplicates for her collection. By cutting out small tufts of hair from the dog's tail, ears, and tummy, she can find out the colors to use. Every dog has snips which are filed under its name. Selection of the pose and the background for the shot is the next thing she concerns herself with. The latter is decided based on the animal or type of dog. To get the background for a portrait of a Chesapeake Bay retriever, she had to sit in a duck blind and make the sketches while there.
She finds animals as well as people have their own opinions. Trying to prove himself a connoisseur, an American pointer snuck up behind an artist and practically mangled her worst painting. The medication he had to take afterwards was so much it makes us think that the painting really was ugly.
For beagle and basset portraits, she blends in with the scenery a dog paw print and also puts the kennel club's identifying symbols on the back. She was able to even produce abstract backgrounds with assistance from her own dog. You can hardly expect these animals to cooperate however. One of her models ran off with a female dog, thus ending whatever painting was supposed to take place on that day. It may seem like a common thing, but odd and unexplainable things do happen when painting an animal's portrait.
