Why Male Parenting Remains The Same
Most sociologists agree that the role of the man in the last 50 years hasn't changed as much as that of the woman. If we try to look at the father's role and how that has changed during the last years, we will conclude that not much has really changed. Especially, compared with the mother’s role, which has become more multidimensional, the father’s tasks remain pretty much the same, regardless of the country, ethnic group, religion, geography etc.
Even though women's role has changed significantly during the last 50-60 years, that of men remains pretty much the same and it can be said that men are still undomesticated. That is to say that the male's role still requires many outdoor activities that don't allow for much participation in the more domestic tasks.
Whether in Africa, Europe or the Americas, the male figure is expected to take up the responsibility of providing the means necessary for the survival of the family. In agricultural economies that could mean cultivating the land so that can produce enough for the family. In the more modern societies that could mean being away at work for many hours a day and try to earn as much as possible. That is also related to the fact that still in many countries men and women do not earn the same amount of money, even in the do the same or similar jobs.
For that reason many modern families split the roles the traditional way, where the dad will go to work and the mum will stay at home responsible for looking after the children. The other way around would probably result in less income for the family, thus many couples would’t consider it seriously.
To put it in a different way, the male's role in the family is still limited by all those social beliefs and norms that characterise all modern societies. Fatherhood should be as important as motherhood but our societies have still a long way to go to get there. Honouring fatherhood with Father’s Day gifts is one social reaction to that problem but is that enough?
