A fat golf shot is where the golfer hits behind the golf ball causing a big divot and little ball flight. When this happens it can be embarrassing and at times can cause injury. Fat shots are commonly caused by swaying at the time of the swing.
Though the fat shot isn't counted among the seven most dreaded golf shots that include...
(a) Pitch over a deep bunker;
(b) Approach Shot over water;
(c) Dreaded half-wedge;
(d) Beginning hole tee off;
(e) Fairway sand shot;
(f) Downhill four-footer and
(g) Follow up shank shot,
However, hitting behind the ball has its problems, drawing golf players to find the secret behind how to stop hitting fat golf shots.
Hitting fat shots nonetheless, is not a very uncommon event for beginners who try to blame their irons for hitting the ground instead of hitting the ball. So do not get disappointed if you end up hitting a fat golf shot, there are many other beginners out there who do this quite a bit as well.
The main reason for hitting fat shots actually has little to do with they clubs and for the most part to do with your shifting body weight and/or wrong posture. It has also got nothing to do with the swing. For most fat golf shot cases the club hits the ground behind the ball, causing you to chunk the ball. It can be quite embarrassing. Nevertheless, there are quite a few ways of curing this. Just keep them in mind to stop hitting fat golf shots.
The following are a couple steps to keep in mind to help you stop hitting fat golf shots.
1.) Begin in your golf set-up position.
2.) Continue to execute the backswing, but hold it at the top.
3.) Move the hips horizontally towards the target and see how it affects the back shoulder to 'dip'.
4.) When the 'dip' is perfect, hit behind the ball.
5.) This should solve the fat golf shot problem, make sure to practice the weight shift.
6.) To keep from hitting fat shots, lessen your shoulder dip
Keeping the lower body out of swing movement is the key to avoiding this problem. Why not begin your downswing with your arms instead? It may be difficult to break any habit about the swing, if you have already got it, but once you have changed it, things will take their natural turn. If you keep your hips still, this weight shift may still occur, but in a more or less natural way.
Also critical would be to keep the front shoulder 'down' on the golf ball which will let you maintain the swing on the right plane. By doing this will also help synchronize your hands with the rest of your body. Be careful that your shoulder stays down toward the target prior to impact or your body will automatically go before your hands causing a fat shot.
