How to calculate Golf handicap using both 9 and 18 hole rounds?

I'm somewhat new to golf, I've played a few times over the last two seasons but am just now playing on a regular basis.

I'm using an online tool to track my golf scores, in the future as I add more rounds, it's supposed to tell me my handicap. But I play combinations of both 18 hole and 9 hole rounds.

Let's say I play the back 9 of an 18 hole course, and my online tool only lets me enter 18 hole rounds... what should I enter as 'dummy' data for the front 9?

I'm not great so I'm usually well over par. If I'm 12 over par for the back 9, should I enter 12 over par for the front 9? Or should I enter par for the front 9? I'm not quite sure what to enter so I do not mess up the data... I want to keep an accurate record of my scores / handicap.

Maybe there's a better online tool for tracking golf scores which allows for both 9 and 18 hole rounds?

Thanks all for your help! :)

The USGA systems combines 9 hole rounds for an 18 hole score and you could do that with the online tool as well. All courses have a rating for the front and back nine; the problem is that they rarely print them on the scorecard and print the 18 hole rating instread. If you look in the clubhouse you will find the documentation of the course ratings provided by the ratings team that worked on that course. If you can't find it ask the pro. Or, if you can't find the 9 hole ratings you could divide the course rating for 18 holes in two, which would be close to accurate for most courses although some courses have one nine that is much harder than the other.

So let's say you don't have the nine hole ratings and you play nine holes on a course that is rated 72.0/124 and shoot a 45. The next time you play nine holes you play a course that is rated 70.0/122 and shoot a 44. You would then post an 18 hole score of 89 on a course that is rated 71.0/123 (the average of the two 18 hole ratings).

If you can get the nine hole ratings (this is the preferred method) for the courses then you would add the two course ratings together and average the slope, rounding as neccessary. So if the first course had a rating of 35.7/125 for the nine you played, and the second had a rating of 35.0/123, then you would post your 89 on for an 18 hole rating/slope of 70.7/124.

This is how the USGA system works with nine and eighteen hole scores. You would post the 18 hole score only after you have two nine hole rounds completed. So if you played your first round on May 8th, and the second on May 20th, you would post the 18 hole score on May 20th; the first nine hole score just sits there until you have somthing to combine it with.
