Who was Important in Your Life?

We can all remember teachers and other people who provided a positive influence on us as children. For me there are several people whose influence on my life has probably kept me on the straight and narrow.

One of the most memorable influencers in my life was Mr Hodge, my class teacher when I was aged ten. He ran a very strict class and happily dished the occasional dose of corporal punishment. Classroom behaviour was maintained by the threat of being whacked and the humiliation involved. He kept a cupboard full of old slippers at the front of the class and whenever some poor soul was sentenced to be whacked they were made to select the weapon that he would use from the cupboard.

I was so frightened of the humiliation and the pain that I never transgressed. The main aspect of his class that really sticks in my memory was his obvious enthusiasm for technology. He kept us informed of all sorts of technological development of the time (the 1960s) including the invention of the transistor and the development of new, manmade fabrics. I joined his after school radio club where I built a simple crystal set radio. I recall being immensely proud of my radio receiver that was built in a large plastic sandwich box. This led to a lifelong interest in technology that resulted in my achieving both a degree and post-graduate qualifications in electronics.

Another influential figure was a near neighbour who was a keen radio amateur and loved model railways. He was a retired old gent who insisted we call him Ernie. In these fearful days it is unlikely that any parents would allow their children to spend any time with an old pensioner for fear of him being a child molester. But I recall spending many happy hours with Ernie, controlling his trains or listening to him communicating with people all over the world with his Amateur radio equipment. He would tell fascinating stories of his days in the army and how he had been stationed in the Burmese jungle during WWII. I shall always recall his graphic description of how he and his fellow soldiers would catch, skin and eat monkeys in the Burmese Jungle.

Then there was Mrs Welch, my English language teacher between the age of eleven and fourteen. I wasn't a particularly good student but Mrs Welch made me feel that my work was important to her, and she took a special interest in improving the readability of my hand writing which was appalling. Working with Mrs Welch gave me confidence in my abilities and this confidence has underpinned everything I have done ever since.

These are just a handful of the key people who have made me the person I am today. I've become a working electronic engineer who loves model aircraft but my hand-writing is still nearly unreadable.
