In weaving, patterning techniques are very important; we will now look at how to weave striped patterns to the woven rug. You will be following these step by step guides which are very simple.

The first one is for, weaving one and one stripes with an even number of warp threads. This is a technique every hand weaver should pay close attention to.

1. Lift the odd threads and pass A across the warp. It will miss the right selvage.

2. Lift the even threads. Wrap B twice downwards round the right selvage and then pass it from right to left.

3. Lift the odd threads. Wrap A twice upwards round the left selvage and pass from left to right.

4. Lift the even threads; pass B from left to right. You will see that B misses the left selvage. Repeat this process.

Next, weaving, one and one stripes with an uneven number of warp threads. Start with A and B at the right, with B lying over the selvage thread. This is a very popular style that many of the premier hand weavers use.

1. Lift the odd numbered threads and pass A from right to left. This thread misses the selvage completely and moves vertically upwards from its previous row, making a small loop at the back of the woven rug.

2. Lift the even numbered threads, wrap B twice downwards round the selvage and pass from right to left.

3. Lift the odd numbered threads and pass A from left to right. It leaves a loop on the back of the woven rug as before, but on the left.

4. Lift the even numbered threads, wrap B twice downwards round the selvage and pass from left to right. Repeat the process.

The final step in adding stripes to the woven rug is reversing the color in, one and one stripes. A color lies over even numbered threads and is going to change and lie over the odd numbered threads.

1. Weave two rows of A color.

2. Twist B twice downwards round the right selvage and pass from right to left. This will make a float over two threads at the right selvage.

3. Take A over this float, under the right selvage and pass it from right to left.

4. Weave B from left to right, missing the left selvage.

5. Twist A twice downwards round the left selvage then passes from left to right. Continue in the same manner.
