The 2010 Dietary Guidelines For Americans was published by the USDA earlier this year and for the first time included recommendations for specific supplementation. They also opened the door to include more scientifically backed supplements for the next report due in 5 years.

In a perfect world, we would get all the vitamins and nutrients we need from the foods we eat. Our bodies will assimilate these much easier from food sources. These new guidelines show that even the USDA recognizes that this just isn't happening. Their recommendations focus a lot on the growing weight problem in America.

The supplements mentioned specifically in this report are Vitamin D, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Iron. Upwards of 80% of Americans may be Vitamin D deficient. The fortification of yogurt, milk, orange juice and soy beverages were lauded in their ability to improve the absorption of calcium and preventing rickets. Folic Acid has been long known to prevent neural tube defects in babies so has been recommended to all women of child-bearing age. The over 50's set has been urged to add crystallined Vitamin B12 for a host of maladies affecting their age group. Iron supplementation was also recommended for all pregnant women.

Where is the door open to more supplementation? The Guides suggest consumption levels of 8-12 ounces of seafood per week with specific references to omega-3 content (DHA and EPA). The fact is, it will be tough for many to meet these levels and supplementation becomes an economical way to close this already growing nutritional gap.

As for the pandemic overweight and obesity issue, the reduction of salt, fat and sugar figure prominently. Their suggestions? Eat less (are these guys rocket scientists or nutritionists!?). Avoid oversized portions. Switch to low or no fat milk. Eat more fruits and vegetables. It sounds pretty simple and a fundamental premise of the guidelines has always been that nutrients should come primarily from foods.

The committee that publishes this report has long been fearful that if they recommended supplements that healthy eating might be replaced by nutrition in a bottle. Evidence suggests this really hasn't happened and for this reason the bias against supplements has faded. While only a few supplements were specifically mentioned there are many other scientifically backed nutrients that could appear in the next report.

Multi-Vitamins were not touted in this report because there wasn't enough evidence to show they aid against chronic diseases for healthy Americans. Perhaps the mere fact that getting the proper vitamins and minerals provides us with more energy and aids proper cell function just currently isn't good enough for them.

Regardless, a growing acceptance of dietary supplementation from the USDA has begun and this is not a bad thing. We don't eat well enough and we need help. This is one step in the right direction that when taken further will not only help the health and well-being of each individual but could go a long way in correcting the American health care system as a whole.
