Miniature golf is simply a miniature version of the actual game of golf. In different countries around the world, other names are used for the game: mini-golf, mini-putt, goofy golf, crazy golf adventure golf and so on. The first mini golf course was built for ladies in Scotland in 1867. The course was 18 holes and the first miniature golf course in the world. Garnet Carter was the first person to patent a game of miniature golf which he called "Tom Thumb Golf" in 1927. Garnet Carter built his course on Lookout Mountain in Tennessee to draw traffic to the hotel he owned. His wife, Frieda Carter did most of the designing of the course's obstacles which had a fairyland theme. Carter founded the Fairyland Manufacturing Corporation, which by 1930 manufactured and sold over 3000 of his Tom Thumb franchises.
In 1922 Thomas McCulloch Fairbairn revolutionized the game with his artificial green, a mixture of cottonseed hulls, sand oil and dye. This made the game available everywhere and led to tens of thousands of courses being built across the USA.
During The Great Depression a high demand resulted in one of the greatest movements in American history for the arts. Miniature golf was less expensive than the real game of golf and the movies, and was also a more physical activity. The year 1926 marked the beginning of the most successful time in its history. No longer was the game for higher class or Scottish ladies. In 1926, a couple of promoters built a pocket course on the roof of a skyscraper in New York City's financial district. It was not long before the Manhattan skyline was alive with rooftop courses. Manhattan gave birth to around 150 rooftop courses; each one was highly successful.
National Miniature golf day was started on May 12 2007 and is officially recognized in the 2008 edition of Chase's Calendar of events. It is held in the USA on every second Saturday in May. The Professional Putters Association and the US Pro Mini-Golf Association both offer national tournaments. The USPMGA as it is known represents the USA in the World Minigolfsport federation whose president is Robert Detweiler (also the representative for the WMF in both North and South America).
